ART BRIDGES GREECE ROMA INITIATIVES
Context & Objective
Romani children in Greece grow up speaking Romani Chib at home, while their formal education takes place entirely in Greek. There are currently no structured Romani language courses in the Greek school system.
This project aims to create a balance between Greek and Romani, supporting children to succeed academically while maintaining and valuing their mother tongue and cultural identity.
Approach
- Affirm the Romani language as a valuable part of children's identity.
-
Support bilingual learning, helping children navigate both Greek (school language) and Romani (home language).
-
Advocate for the gradual inclusion of Romani language and culture in education.
-
Create a bilingual booklet (Greek–Romani) with everyday topics and activities to support learning, language development, and cultural identity.
Vision
In the long term, contribute to a more inclusive education system in Greece, where Romani language and culture are recognized, supported, and potentially introduced as part of school life.
