ART BRIDGES Roma Initiatives prioritise the promotion and safeguarding of the Romani language as a vital element of Roma cultural identity and heritage transmission. It is recognised as one of the most significant cultural values and legacies of Roma communities, particularly in contexts of extreme poverty and social isolation, where the language continues to thrive as a source of cultural richness, resilience, dignity, pride, and collective identity.

ART BRIDGES GREECE ROMA INITIATIVES 

Context & Objective

Romani children in Greece grow up speaking Romani Chib at home, while their formal education takes place entirely in Greek. There are currently no structured Romani language courses in the Greek school system.

This project aims to create a balance between Greek and Romani, supporting children to succeed academically while maintaining and valuing their mother tongue and cultural identity.

Approach

1. Affirm the Romani language as a valuable part of children's identity.
2. Support bilingual learning, helping children navigate both Greek (school language) and Romani (home language).
3. Advocate for the gradual inclusion of Romani language and culture in education.
4. Create a bilingual booklet (Greek–Romani) with everyday topics and activities to support learning, language development, and cultural identity.

Vision

In the long term, contribute to a more inclusive education system in Greece, where Romani language and culture are recognized, supported, and potentially introduced as part of school life.

Οι εθελοντικές  πρωτοβουλίες  για τους Ελλήνες τσιγγανούς   του φορέας μας  δίνουν προτεραιότητα στην προώθηση και τη διαφύλαξη της ρομανί γλώσσας ως ζωτικό στοιχείο της πολιτισμικής ταυτότητας και της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς των Ρομά. Η γλώσσα αυτή αναγνωρίζεται ως μία από τις πιο σημαντικές αξίες και παρακαταθήκες των κοινοτήτων Ρομά, ιδιαίτερα σε συνθήκες ακραίας φτώχειας και κοινωνικής απομόνωσης, όπου εξακολουθεί να ακμάζει ως πηγή πολιτιστικού πλούτου, ανθεκτικότητας, αξιοπρέπειας και συλλογικής περηφάνιας. Ο φορέας μας αναπτύσσει και υλοποιεί πολιτιστικές και εκπαιδευτικές πρωτοβουλίες που ενισχύουν την ορατότητα της ρομά πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς, προάγουν τη διαπολιτισμική κατανόηση και στηρίζουν τη δημιουργική έκφραση μέσω της τέχνης, της εκπαίδευσης και της παράδοσης.
